EDU 10 - Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Challenging Pediatric Brain Tumor Cases
MODERATOR(S)
Bree Eaton, MD - Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University
session DESCRIPTION
Pediatric neuro-oncology is highly complex given the patient and tumor heterogeneity within even common diagnosis, the importance of balancing tumor control with treatment associated morbidity, and the limited high-quality data to guide treatment decisions for rare tumor populations. For many cases, particularly in children, there are often no right answers and varying practice patterns exist. The goal of this education session is to discuss challenging pediatric brain tumor in a tumor board style format. The session will also include focused didactic presentations on pertinent topics related to the cases discussed. The panels will debate varying treatment approaches, giving the the audience the opportunity to hear varying perspectives on clinical management and the data and personal experience regrading both clinical outcomes and treatment associated toxicity that supports different treatment approaches. In addition, we will delve into technical details of treatment planning and delivery for the cases presented, highlighting important and novel topics such as biological modeling in proton therapy. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in each case discussion. The session will have a focus on young children with medulloblastoma and ependymoma.
learning objectives
- Discuss the benefits and risks of craniospinal irradiation in young children and alternative approaches to treatment.
- Describe technical considerations to mitigate radiation toxicity in pediatric brain tumors.
